English: First widely used character encoding for the Japanese language. Constrained to one byte per character, the standard version included only ISO 646-JP (almost but not quite ASCII) characters and Katakana characters (including punctuation). Generally, these were displayed monospaced, resulting in Katakana characters only being as wide as the Roman letters. They were later retained in Shift_JIS as "half-width Katakana". A few vendor-specific variants were also developed. Both 7-bit and 8-bit encodings were defined, as well as the shift in / shift out method of switching between the Roman and Kana 7-bit encodings. In addition to being used in Japan, it was also used for the classic The Matrix rain effect (though not necessarily in all recreations).
